British Airways IT Meltdown: Passengers Stranded and Flights Disrupted

Another system failure leaves thousands facing delays and cancellations worldwide.

A Familiar Crisis Returns

British Airways (BA) is grappling with yet another IT failure, disrupting flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The technical issue, which began around 5:00 PM GMT, has caused significant delays at London Heathrow Terminal 5 and airports abroad. The airline confirmed the issue involves communication systems between pilots and the operations center.

Delays and Cancellations Pile Up

The disruption has delayed flights by up to two hours, with several cancellations already confirmed. Passengers traveling to Geneva, Vancouver, Vienna, and New York experienced extended delays. Short-haul flights to domestic destinations such as Edinburgh and Glasgow also faced significant setbacks.

Inbound flights from European cities, including Barcelona and Prague, are landing well past their scheduled times, pushing some arrivals to midnight. The ripple effect means many passengers connecting at Heathrow will likely miss their onward flights.

BA’s website and app have been largely inaccessible, displaying error messages citing high demand. These outages have left travelers unable to check flight statuses or make alternative arrangements.

Chaos Across the Network

Flight BA365 from Lyon to Heathrow exemplifies the chaos. It remained grounded for over two hours before finally departing. A passenger stranded in Vienna took to social media to demand updates, highlighting frustrations shared by countless others.

Long-haul flights have not been spared. BA’s flagship flight to Singapore departed an hour late, and the inbound flight from Johannesburg is running two hours behind schedule. Such delays strain BA’s ability to maintain its schedules, compounding passenger dissatisfaction.

A History of IT Failures

This isn’t BA’s first brush with IT troubles. In May 2023, a similar failure grounded over 200 flights, affecting 30,000 passengers during a bank holiday weekend. The airline’s most infamous collapse occurred in May 2017, when a routine systems upgrade caused complete operational failure at Heathrow, impacting hundreds of thousands of travelers.

What’s Next for Passengers?

British Airways has assured passengers that teams are working to resolve the issue. However, delays continue, and cancellations have begun. Many fear prolonged disruptions, given BA’s history of slow recovery from IT crises.

For now, travelers are urged to monitor updates and prepare for extended waiting times or alternative arrangements. As BA struggles to restore its systems, the incident raises serious questions about the airline’s technological resilience and contingency planning.
