Sudden Chaos at a Quiet Holiday Spot
What began as a quiet Saturday afternoon at Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park turned into a scene of shock and panic. At around 2:30 p.m. on April 12, a small plane crashed into the resort area on the Isle of Wight. Within moments, the aircraft caught fire, sending thick smoke into the sky.
Witnesses, many of them tourists enjoying a holiday break, watched in disbelief. Flames erupted near the hedges after the light aircraft clipped a rooftop and hit the ground. Despite the impact and fire, both passengers onboard managed to escape.
Passengers Survive With Minor Injuries
According to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the aircraft sustained extensive damage from both the crash and the blaze. Fortunately, the two people onboard exited the aircraft before it was fully engulfed.
Paramedics treated both at the scene for minor injuries. Neither required hospital admission. Authorities later confirmed the pair was safe and recovering.

Terry Sloane, who was vacationing with family, saw the plane come down. “It looked like it lost power,” he told the Isle of Wight County Press. “It clipped a chimney and went down near some hedges.”
He said the passengers “popped the canopy pretty quickly and got out,” adding, “I was amazed.”
According to Sloane, nearby visitors brought fire extinguishers to the site. “People just ran toward the smoke,” he said. “It was a moment of real panic but also real community.”
A Close Call for One Local Resident
Tina, a local woman whose home was nearly hit, recalled how close the aircraft came to disaster. “It scraped my roof,” she said. “Big pieces of debris landed in the yard. I had just stepped inside.”
Moments later, she saw the sky fill with smoke. “Suddenly, there were huge plumes of smoke and flames,” she said. “It was very, very frightening.”
She praised the pilot for checking in on her later. “What a lovely man,” she said. “To be worried about my house after nearly dying—it’s incredible.”
Investigation Underway
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary is investigating the cause of the crash. Although the park remained open, authorities cordoned off the crash site.
