First Wave of Airstrikes Hit Military and Nuclear Sites
TEL AVIV / TEHRAN — Explosions rocked several locations across Iran late Thursday as Israel launched what it called a “preemptive, precise” strike. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation after early reports emerged of Israeli warplanes crossing into Iranian airspace.

“This is the beginning of a broader campaign,” a senior IDF official told The War Zone. “We are in an emergency situation across the country.”
Dozens of Israeli Air Force jets struck targets inside Iran, including military installations and suspected nuclear facilities. The IDF said the strikes were guided by “high-quality intelligence” and came in response to Iran’s aggressive posture in recent months.
Though Israeli officials have not given full details, explosions were reported in and around Tehran. Other cities in central and southern Iran also reported loud blasts and air defense activity.
The Strike Follows Rising Tensions
Earlier on Thursday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a harsh report accusing Iran of concealing uranium enrichment activities. Iran dismissed the findings and threatened to build new nuclear facilities in undisclosed locations.
That same evening, Israeli jets entered Iranian airspace. The IDF claimed the mission was both preemptive and defensive, aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear advances and retaliation planning.
“The Iranian regime has waged a direct and indirect war against Israel for years,” said the IDF in a public statement. “It arms and funds terror groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and other proxies. It has now come close to acquiring weapons of mass destruction.”
No U.S. Role Confirmed
The U.S. distanced itself from the attack. A senior American official confirmed that Washington was not involved.
“If Israel is striking Iran, there is no U.S. involvement, no U.S. assistance,” the official told The War Zone.
This aligns with President Biden’s previously cautious stance on direct military involvement in the region. The White House has repeatedly urged restraint from all parties.
However, Washington is monitoring the situation closely. U.S. military forces in the region remain on alert for any retaliatory action from Iran or its allies.
A Campaign or a Warning Shot?
Military analysts are split on the nature of this strike. It may mark the start of a wider campaign. Or it could be a limited operation aimed at disrupting specific targets based on fresh intelligence.
“This could go either way,” said a defense expert based in Europe. “If Iran retaliates heavily, we could see escalation across the region—from Lebanon to the Gulf.”
Iran has not issued a full response yet. However, social media channels affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard have called the strike “an act of war.”
Public on Alert, Region on Edge
The IDF has urged Israeli citizens to stay calm but follow instructions from the Home Front Command. Emergency protocols have been activated across Israel. Air defenses are on high alert, and shelters are being prepared in cities closest to potential retaliation points.
“The resilience of Israeli citizens will be key in the days ahead,” the IDF noted.
Meanwhile, fears are growing that the situation may spiral out of control. Oil prices spiked overnight. Diplomats across Europe called for restraint. The UN Security Council is expected to convene an emergency session within 24 hours.

Background: A Long-Brewing Conflict
Israel has long accused Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. Tensions have mounted since the October 7th attacks by Hamas and subsequent clashes across the region.
Iran is widely believed to have supplied weapons, training, and funds to terror groups fighting Israel. The IDF claims that Tehran has also launched missiles directly at Israeli territory twice during the ongoing “Swords of Iron” conflict.
“This regime has made its goal clear: the destruction of Israel,” said the IDF. “We will not allow it to gain nuclear weapons.”
What Comes Next?
The coming hours and days will be critical. Much depends on Iran’s next move.
If Tehran retaliates, Israel could launch further strikes. Other actors, including Hezbollah in Lebanon or militias in Iraq and Syria, may also enter the fray.
For now, the world watches. The Middle East stands on the edge of yet another major conflict.
This is a developing story.
