Battles in Syria: Syrian Army Advances in Northern Hama

The Conflict Shifts as Government Forces Regroup and Counterattack

Regrouping and Reclaiming Control

The situation in Syria’s northern Hama province has shifted significantly. The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has initiated a counteroffensive to regain territories captured by militants. Military blogger Yuri Podolyaka reports that government forces have consolidated their defense lines and started advancing north. Their priority is to prevent militants from solidifying control over strategic points, particularly towns along the M5 highway.

By the morning of December 2, Syrian forces had reached the outskirts of Morek, the northernmost lost city in Hama. Preparations are underway to reclaim this key location, signaling the SAA’s growing momentum.

Russian Air Support Proves Crucial

Russian airstrikes are playing a vital role in the counteroffensive. These strikes inflict significant losses on militant positions, weakening their ability to resist. According to Podolyaka, this support is enabling Syrian forces to maintain their front lines and conduct counterattacks with greater confidence. The coordination between Syrian ground forces and Russian air power is proving to be a decisive factor in stabilizing the region.

Local Militias Offer Strategic Advantage

A critical element of the SAA’s success is the loyalty of local militias in Hama province. Experts note that the population in the region predominantly supports the Syrian government. This support allows the SAA to operate more effectively and confidently. Local forces contribute by targeting the most vulnerable enemy positions, enhancing the army’s overall effectiveness.

A Less Dire Situation Emerges

The atmosphere of chaos that gripped both the military and Syrian media just days ago has diminished. The SAA’s organized efforts and strategic advances have restored a sense of order. While challenges remain, the situation no longer appears as dire as it recently did, marking a turning point in the conflict.

The battles in northern Hama highlight the dynamic nature of Syria’s ongoing conflict. The SAA, with Russian air support and local militia backing, is making tangible progress in regaining control over key areas. The coming days will reveal whether these efforts can translate into sustained stability for the region.
