Firefighters Face Difficult Battle as Flames Spread Through Building
Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) crews responded swiftly to a major fire at a veterans center north of downtown. Despite their efforts, the fire remains out of control. Crews continue to attack the blaze from all sides. The building, located at Pennsylvania and 10th Street, provides housing and support for formerly homeless veterans. Firefighters estimate it may take several hours to control the flames fully.
Fire Erupts from Building’s Center, Prompting Full-Scale Response
Firefighters reported flames bursting from the building’s center around 11:30 p.m. Over 100 firefighters and 40 vehicles are fighting the fire. Crews formed a perimeter on all sides and launched an aggressive attack from multiple angles. News networks captured aerial footage, showing the flames engulfing the structure and illuminating the night sky.
Nine People Unaccounted for, Search Continues
Emergency crews conducted a full sweep of the building but have yet to locate nine individuals. The facility, run by Helping Veterans and Families (HVAF), offers housing for 39 homeless veterans. Forty-one out of the 50 current residents are confirmed safe. Medical staff transported two individuals with minor injuries to Eskenazi Hospital. As of midnight, no firefighters have reported injuries.
IndyGo Assists with Emergency Shelter for Residents
IndyGo buses arrived on-site to shelter displaced residents, offering them a safe, climate-controlled environment. This temporary solution provides warmth and safety to residents left without immediate shelter. Crews anticipate that residents may need this temporary housing until authorities contain the fire.
Veterans Center Offers Vital Support for Local Heroes
HVAF, which operates the building, provides essential services for veterans in central Indiana. The organization supports hundreds of veterans with housing and basic needs. This fire poses a significant challenge for both residents and HVAF’s mission to help local veterans.
Firefighters Committed to Hours-Long Battle
IFD continues to work on-site, expecting an hours-long fight against the blaze. Emergency teams remain focused on the immediate goal: to protect lives and limit damage.
