Trump’s Explosive Claims Against January 6th Committee
Former President Donald Trump accused the January 6th committee of “deleting and destroying” critical evidence related to their investigation. Trump argued that these alleged actions warrant criminal charges for committee members, singling out former Representative Liz Cheney. Trump described the committee as a group of “political thugs” and claimed Cheney orchestrated the destruction of evidence, saying, “For what they did, they should go to jail.”
House Republicans later released a report supporting Trump’s claims. They alleged that the committee deleted over 100 files, some just before Republicans regained the House majority. The report also accused the committee of withholding witness interview recordings used during public hearings, further fueling Republican criticism.

“Donald Trump mobilized an angry mob, sending them to the Capitol, where they attacked police and halted the vote count,” Cheney stated. She also described his inaction during the riot as a “breach of our Constitution” and the worst misconduct by any president in U.S. history. Cheney emphasized the importance of holding Trump accountable to preserve democratic institutions.
Competing Narratives Over January 6th Investigation
The January 6th committee had labeled Trump the “central cause” of the Capitol riot and recommended criminal charges. However, the Republican counter-report argued the investigation was more about advancing a political agenda than uncovering facts. They accused the committee of hiring “Hollywood producers” to dramatize their findings and neglecting procedural transparency.
While the committee maintained its work was thorough and justified, critics like Trump and GOP allies argued that the omission of certain records undermined the investigation’s credibility. Cheney dismissed these claims as “ridiculous and false,” highlighting her belief that Trump was trying to rewrite history.
Personal Attacks Escalate the Tensions
Trump and Cheney’s feud has gone beyond policy disagreements, devolving into personal attacks.
