Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Charged in International Sex Trafficking Operation

Prosecutors allege Jeffries and his partner exploited dozens of men

Authorities arrested former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and his partner, Matthew Smith, on Tuesday, accusing them of running an international sex trafficking and prostitution operation. Federal prosecutors claim that Jeffries and Smith used their wealth and status to coerce men into performing sexual acts.

Along with the couple, James Jacobson, identified as their recruiter, faces charges for his role in the operation. Prosecutors allege that Jacobson organized “tryouts” with men from around the world, engaging them in sexual activities for money. After Jeffries approved these men, they were flown to his New York home, where prosecutors say they endured further coercion.

The Charges

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace described the scheme as “violent and exploitative.” He alleges that Jeffries and Smith pressured the men to consume alcohol, Viagra, and muscle relaxants. In cases where the men couldn’t or didn’t want to participate, the couple allegedly injected them with drugs to ensure compliance.

Prosecutors have identified 15 victims so far, though they believe many more were involved. Peace stated the operation likely exploited “dozens and dozens of men,” suggesting a broader pattern of abuse.

A Well-Funded Network

According to federal authorities, Jeffries poured millions of dollars into maintaining the operation’s secrecy. Prosecutors allege that the couple used their financial resources to fund international travel, hotel stays, and security personnel. These measures allowed them to conceal their activities while continuing the exploitation over a prolonged period.

Jeffries and Smith have denied the charges. Jeffries’ lawyer said they would respond in detail once the indictment is fully unsealed. A lawyer for Smith has not yet commented on the latest developments. Abercrombie & Fitch has declined to comment, distancing itself from its former CEO.

Legal Battle Ahead

As the case unfolds, Jeffries and Smith will likely fight the charges in court. Federal authorities, however, appear determined to hold the couple accountable for their alleged actions. The full scope of the case remains unclear, as the indictment is only partially unsealed. Prosecutors are continuing to investigate the extent of the operation and the number of men affected.

This case highlights the misuse of power and wealth in exploiting vulnerable individuals. With Jeffries’ high-profile status in the fashion industry, the accusations bring significant attention, revealing a disturbing operation that operated in secrecy for years. The legal proceedings are expected to uncover more details in the coming weeks.
