Prescription Bottle Becomes Key Focus in Investigation
Investigators probing the tragic deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, have identified a prescription bottle as a crucial piece of evidence. Santa Fe Sheriff Adam Mendoza stated that pills were scattered around the container when it was found on the countertop in the couple’s home. Authorities now consider the discovery “something of concern.”
Medications Removed from the Scene
Three types of medication were collected from the residence, including Diltiazem, a blood pressure medication; a thyroid medication; and Tylenol. These have been handed over to the medical examiner’s office to aid in determining the cause of death. Mendoza emphasized the importance of the toxicology results but cautioned that it may take months before conclusions are reached.
Hackman and Wife Found in Separate Rooms
Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 63, were discovered in different parts of their $3.8 million Santa Fe home by a caretaker on Wednesday. Hackman’s body was found in the mudroom, with his sunglasses nearby, leading police to speculate that he may have “suddenly fallen.” His wife was found in the bathroom, lying on her side near a space heater. Authorities believe she also “abruptly fell to the ground.”
The couple’s dog was also found dead inside a closet near Arakawa’s body. Investigators suspect the deaths occurred on February 17, 2025, based on data from Hackman’s pacemaker.
No Signs of Foul Play
Despite the unsettling scene, police do not currently suspect foul play. The front door was found ajar, but there were no signs of forced entry. “I’m confident there is no foul play, just based on the lack of evidence,” Mendoza stated. However, he added that authorities are keeping an open mind while awaiting full toxicology results.
Gas Leak Ruled Out
Initial theories suggesting a gas leak were dismissed by the Santa Fe Fire Department. Chief Brian Moya confirmed that multiple tests found no trace of harmful gases in or around the home. Fire officials conducted another round of testing the following day and found no issues.
Awaiting Toxicology Results for Answers
Investigators believe the toxicology report will provide crucial insights. “The autopsy results, the official results, are going to help steer us in the right direction,” Mendoza said. He urged patience from the public and Hackman’s family as authorities work toward uncovering the cause of death.
While many questions remain unanswered, officials continue their investigation with hopes of bringing clarity to the unexpected passing of the beloved actor and his wife.
