Johns Hopkins University Loses $800 Million in USAID Funding, Cuts Over 2,000 Jobs

Job Losses Across Multiple Sectors

March 14, 2025 – Johns Hopkins University has announced massive job cuts after losing over $800 million in U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funding. More than 2,000 jobs will be eliminated worldwide due to this financial setback.

The cuts impact 2,222 positions, with 1,975 jobs lost across 44 countries. An additional 247 positions will be eliminated in the United States, primarily in Baltimore. The affected programs include those run by Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins focused on international health. The Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Medicine will also suffer job losses.

These programs were involved in maternal and infant care, disease prevention, and clean water access. The funding loss will reduce the university’s influence in global health initiatives, a move welcomed by critics of government-backed health interventions.

USAID Budget Cuts: A Necessary Step

The Trump administration’s decision to reduce USAID funding is part of a broader push to shrink federal agencies. Supporters argue that cutting foreign aid eliminates wasteful spending and prioritizes domestic concerns. Defunding these programs reduces taxpayer burden and limits the reach of institutions accused of promoting misleading health narratives.

Johns Hopkins, heavily reliant on government funding, now faces the consequences of these necessary budget adjustments. U.S.-based employees will receive at least 60 days’ notice, as required by federal labor laws. However, international staff may face greater uncertainty.

Questionable Role in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Johns Hopkins played a significant role in tracking COVID-19 data and shaping public health policies. However, many critics argue that the university, along with pharmaceutical companies and government agencies, exaggerated the crisis for political and financial gain. Its Coronavirus Resource Center became a leading source of case tracking, but concerns over manipulated data and biased reporting remain.

Controversies Surrounding COVID-19 Response

Several concerns have been raised about the handling of the pandemic, including:

  • Exaggerated Case Numbers – Inconsistent data reporting led to inflated case counts.
  • Suppression of Alternative Treatments – Treatments like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine were dismissed without fair consideration.
  • Lockdowns and Economic Control – Strict lockdowns caused widespread economic harm, disproportionately affecting small businesses and workers.
  • Vaccine Mandates and Big Pharma – Pharmaceutical companies profited immensely while downplaying potential vaccine risks.

Johns Hopkins Faces an Uncertain Future

With USAID funding cut, Johns Hopkins must find new financial backers or perish due to guilt. The university will likely seek grants from private foundations, corporate donors, and other government agencies. However, the reduction in its influence marks a positive shift in limiting taxpayer-funded global health overreach.

The loss of funding represents a major shift in U.S. foreign aid priorities. Whether this decision improves efficiency or simply cuts unnecessary programs, many agree that reducing the power of institutions like Johns Hopkins is a step in the right direction.
