Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister Gallant, Sparking Nationwide Protests

Leadership Shakeup Deepens Israel’s Crisis Amid Gaza War

Netanyahu’s Decision Sparks Outrage Across Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, escalating tensions within Israel. Netanyahu cited a “loss of trust” over Gallant’s handling of conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. He claimed Gallant’s divergent stance exposed dangerous rifts in Israel’s leadership and weakened national security. Within hours, Gallant responded on X (formerly Twitter), promising lifelong dedication to Israel’s security. Netanyahu appointed Foreign Minister Israel Katz as Gallant’s replacement, who quickly vowed to prioritize hostage recovery from Gaza. The sudden firing triggered massive protests nationwide, with citizens flooding streets in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other cities.

Escalating Government and Military Divisions

Gallant’s dismissal underscores deep divisions in Israel’s government and military. He advocated for a ceasefire to prioritize rescuing hostages from Gaza. Netanyahu, however, argued that only total destruction of Hamas could secure lasting peace. Far-right leaders like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrated Gallant’s firing, calling him an “obstacle to absolute victory.” Ben-Gvir and other ultra-nationalists had long pushed for more aggressive actions in Gaza. This decision comes amid growing demands from Israel’s military and citizens for clearer objectives in the Gaza conflict.

The United States responded swiftly, with the Pentagon acknowledging Gallant as a “trusted partner.” American officials promised ongoing support for Israel’s defense under Katz. Al Jazeera analyst Marwan Bishara said Gallant’s removal might help Netanyahu solidify alliances with ultra-Orthodox leaders. Bishara suggested this change could bring more unity to the government’s far-right faction, easing tensions among nationalist leaders.

Massive Protests Erupt Nationwide

Gallant’s firing has enraged many Israelis, who feel Netanyahu’s decision betrays national priorities. Protesters in Tel Aviv blocked major highways and lit bonfires. In Jerusalem, hundreds gathered outside Netanyahu’s residence, calling for accountability. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum condemned Gallant’s firing, warning it jeopardizes efforts to secure captives’ release. Leaders within the Forum accused Netanyahu of mismanaging Israel’s Gaza strategy, claiming military objectives should now shift toward securing a hostage deal.

Gallant’s removal follows another controversial dismissal earlier this year. Netanyahu fired him over opposition to a judicial overhaul plan, only to reinstate him after widespread outcry. Recently, Gallant pushed for clarity on Israel’s war objectives, opposing far-right plans for Israeli rule over Gaza. His decision to approve 7,000 draft orders for ultra-Orthodox men may have further strained his relationship with Netanyahu.

Uncertain Future for Netanyahu’s Government

This political shakeup raises questions about Netanyahu’s long-term stability as prime minister. Analysts view Gallant’s removal as a potential crack in his administration. With mounting protests and growing dissent, Netanyahu faces intense pressure to manage both internal divides and the Gaza conflict. As Israel confronts these wartime challenges, Netanyahu’s leadership hangs in the balance.
