With 218 Seats Nearly in Hand, Republicans Stand Poised to Control the House
GOP on the Brink of House Control
Republicans are closing in on a House majority, with 216 seats secured. Only two more seats stand between them and control of the House. Ten races remain undecided, and Republicans currently lead in eight, while Democrats hold small leads in the remaining two.
Key Powers at Stake: Committees, Subpoenas, and Impeachment
A House majority grants Republicans major influence, including control over committee chairmanships. This power enables them to set legislative priorities and direct investigations. Subpoena authority allows the majority to demand testimonies and access critical documents, adding weight to any inquiries they pursue.
With House control, Republicans could investigate issues aligning with their policy goals. These may include current administration strategies, foreign policy decisions, and energy practices. Additionally, a House majority, however slim, could introduce impeachment articles, escalating partisan tensions.
Decisive Races: Where GOP and Democrats Stand
Several races remain uncalled, making the final outcome unpredictable. In California’s 45th District, Republican Michelle Steel leads Democrat Derek Tran by 2.9 points, with 78.9% of votes counted. Steel’s lead of 7,590 votes signals a likely GOP victory.
In California’s 41st District, GOP veteran Rep. Ken Calvert leads Democrat Will Rollins by 2.8 points, with 75% of votes reported. Calvert’s three-decade tenure may help him secure the seat.
However, Democrats still lead some races. In California’s 27th District, Democrat George Whitesides edges past Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Garcia by 0.8 points, with 85% of votes counted. Whitesides, a former NASA chief of staff, remains in a tight race with Garcia.
GOP Optimism vs. Democratic Hope
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) remains optimistic, expressing confidence in a Republican-led House. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) insists the final outcome remains undecided.
As both parties watch the final races, the stakes remain high. Even a narrow majority will strongly impact the next session of Congress.
