PM Orbán: The EU Risks “Falling Apart”

Orbán Issues Stark Warning

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sounded a grim alarm about the future of the European Union. He warned the bloc could “fall apart” within the next decade without deep reform. Speaking on September 7, Orbán described the EU as drifting into “disintegration and fragmentation.” He cautioned it may be remembered as “a noble attempt with a depressing result.”

Europe Losing Ground

Orbán argued that Europe has been poorly led for years. He said the EU has lost ground to the United States in both economics and influence. “In 2008, the United States made up 23% of the world economy, the EU 25%,” Orbán said. “Today, the U.S. has 27%, the EU only 17.8%.” The Hungarian leader said Europe’s decline was no accident. He blamed the decision to build not only a common market but also a political and monetary union around the euro. “Everyone knows it is only a matter of time before it cracks, breaks, splits apart,” he said.

Budget May Be the Last

Orbán raised doubts about the EU’s financial future. He suggested the bloc’s next long-term budget, planned for 2028–2035, could be its final one. He criticized Brussels’ financial policies, blasting the push for “common indebtedness.” Orbán called it “an act of desperation aimed at holding the bloc together.” He insisted such policies were unsustainable and risked deepening divisions.

A New Structure for Europe

To preserve cooperation, Orbán outlined a radical restructuring of the EU. He proposed a system of “concentric circles.” The outer circle would focus only on defence and energy. Orbán suggested Turkey, the United Kingdom, and even Ukraine could join this group. A second circle would operate as a common market. The third would include eurozone members with shared fiscal policies. The fourth, innermost circle, would form a deeper political union. This core group would accept binding rules on gender, migration, and the rule of law. Orbán stressed that this layered model could save the European project from collapse.

Orbán Stands Firm

The Hungarian leader has often clashed with Brussels over sovereignty, migration, and financial policy. His latest warning underscored his belief that the EU has strayed from its original purpose. Orbán insisted Europe must choose: reform or disintegration. He declared that without a clear shift, history will judge the EU as a failed experiment.
